Kate Lebo and the Book of Difficult Fruit

A Washington State Book Award Celebration

A savory and nourishing evening with special guests to celebrate Kate Lebo and her debut collection of nonfiction, The Book of Difficult Fruit, which has garnered a 2022 Washington State Book Award.

Several organizations—The Washington Center for the Book, Seattle Public Library, Spokane Public Library, and Wishing Tree Books—merge to celebrate The Book of Difficult Fruit by Kate Lebo, winner of the 2022 WA State Book Award. Lebo is a writer, educator, baker, and apprentice cheesemaker here in Spokane; she will read alongside other local writers who helped shape this "sage and sensuous" collection. There will also be cheese and preserves, and a celebration of other fruity titles for all ages, including some of Lebo's favorite picture books. This is sure to be a savory and nourishing evening of stories and sustenance.

This will be a hybrid event, both in-person and streamed live on the Spokane Public Library YouTube channel.

About the author:

Kate Lebo's first collection of nonfiction, The Book of Difficult Fruit, won the 2022 Washington State Book Award for Creative Nonfiction. It was also named a best book of the year by NPR, The Atlantic, New York magazine, Electric Literature, and The Globe and Mail. She's the author of the cookbook Pie School—which will be re-released in an expanded and revised edition in late summer 2023—and the poetry chapbook Seven Prayers to Cathy McMorris Rodgers, and coeditor with Samuel Ligon of Pie & Whiskey: Writers Under the Influence of Butter & Booze. Her essays and poems have appeared or will appear soon in Best American Essays, Orion, Harper’s Magazine, Cake Zine, The Inlander, and elsewhere. She teaches nonfiction for the University of Idaho’s MFA program and lives with her family in Spokane, Washington, where she is an apprentice cheesemaker to Lora Lea Misterly of Quillisascut Farm.
