Join Olga Lucia Herrera to better understand how Latinos/Hispanics label themselves and how ethnic labels have changed over time. This program celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month.
Latino/Hispanic/Chicano/LatinX/Mexican-American... What do the different terms mean, and how has identity changed over time in the U.S.? What do we miss when we don't understand the labels?
The US Census Bureau 2020 reports that 18.5% of Americans identify as Hispanic or Latino. Yet, often people of Latino background identify with their country of origin. This presentation focuses on observations obtained serving the Latino population in Spokane County. After this session, participants will better understand how Latinos/Hispanics label themselves and will feel comfortable discussing how the ethnic labels have changed over time.
