When the Dead Talk Back: Modern American Spiritualism

Gonzaga professor Dr. Emily Clark will discuss Spiritualism, consider reasons behind its popularity in the nineteenth century, and discuss its intersection with politics and citizenship.

During the nineteenth century a new religious movement swept across the United States and beyond. Spiritualism, the practice of communicating with the spirits of the dead, gripped Americans’ religious imaginations and raised new questions about the invisible forces at work in this world and the nature of the world beyond. In this presentation, appropriately themed for the month of October, Dr. Emily Clark will introduce listeners to the practice of Spiritualism, consider reasons behind its popularity in the nineteenth century, and discuss its intersection with politics and citizenship.
