A prose poem workshop, presented by PEN Award winning novelist and poet Lindsay Hill. This is part of the first annual Inland Northwest Poetry Salon.
The lines between poetry and prose have, for some time, been blurring. Prose poetry has the potential to open new creative avenues to poets, both narrative and lyric, and to engage their poetic skills in compositionally innovative ways. For writing just setting out on their poetic journeys, prose poetry can also serve as an entry point to the art.
This workshop will involve a brief historical overview of the prose poem (from Rimbaud and Rilke, to Gertrude Stein, Amy Lowell, Russel Edson, Harryette Mullen, and others), followed by prompts and writing time, opportunities to read created poems to the group, and a Q&A to close.
This is one of eleven poetry events occurring at the first annual Inland Northwest Poetry Salon on June 1st.
This first-annual, day-long event at the Liberty Park Library (402 S. Pittsburg Street) will feature panels, poetry workshops and a bevy of local writers. The Inland NW Poetry Salon celebrates the craft of poetry, spotlights regional poets, and welcomes participants in all phases of their writing lives.
Lindsay Hill has a literature degree from Bard College and has published six books of poetry and one novel (Sea of Hooks, McPherson & Co.), which won the PEN Center USA Fiction Award. He has published poetry and prose in a wide variety of journals including: Conjunctions (online), New England Review, and New American Writing. One of his poetry books, Contango, is a book-length prose poem, and his first novel has many prose poem elements. His second novel, Tidal Lock, has been accepted for publication by McPherson & Co., and contains many prose poem elements as well.
